Intelligent PDU Power Rails

Intelligent Power Distribution Units for Critical Infrastructure

Intelligent PDUs (Power Distribution Units) are advanced power rails designed to provide visibility, control, and protection for critical electrical loads in data centres, server rooms, industrial environments, and mission-critical installations.

At SECAP, Intelligent PDUs is the umbrella term we use to describe network-connected PDUs that go beyond basic power distribution. These solutions enable power monitoring, remote management, and intelligent decision-making to improve uptime, energy efficiency, and operational control.

Our intelligent PDU range is Australian designed, Locally and Globally manufactured, and available in a wide range of standard and custom made configurations.

What Makes a PDU “Intelligent”?

An intelligent PDU typically includes:

  • Network connectivity (Ethernet / IP based)

  • Real-time power monitoring

  • Local and remote visibility

  • Alarm and alerting capability

  • Optional outlet-level control or measurement

Depending on the level of intelligence required, PDUs generally fall into three categories.

Types of Intelligent PDUs

1. Monitored Intelligent PDUs

Best for visibility without remote switching.

Monitored PDUs provide real-time insight into power usage without controlling individual outlets.

They are ideal where power capacity planning, load balancing, and fault detection are required, but remote switching is not.

Typical features include:

  • Input power monitoring (V, A, kW, kWh)

  • Optional branch or circuit monitoring

  • SNMP, web interface, or DCIM integration

  • Alarms for overloads and threshold breaches

Common applications:

  • Data centres and edge facilities

  • Server rooms and communications racks

  • Compliance and energy reporting environments

2. Switched Intelligent PDUs

Best for remote power control and rebooting

Switched PDUs add the ability to remotely turn outlets on or off, allowing operators to power-cycle equipment without physical access to the rack.

Typical features include:

  • All monitored PDU functionality
    PLUS:

  • Remote outlet switching

  • User access control and permissions

  • Sequenced power-up to prevent inrush currents

Common applications:

  • Remote or unmanned sites

  • Network and IT infrastructure

  • Reducing call outs and downtime

3. Per-Outlet Monitored Managed Intelligent PDUs

Best for granular power visibility

Per-outlet monitored PDUs provide detailed measurement at each outlet, allowing precise tracking of individual devices.

Typical features include:

  • Input and outlet-level monitoring

  • Highly accurate metering

  • Advanced alarms and reporting

  • DCIM and BMS integration

Common applications:

  • Colocation facilities

  • Customer billing or chargeback

  • High-density racks and energy optimisation
